From the Latin Sidonius, named after the inhabitants of the city of Sidon.
In the Bible, Sidon was a city in Phenicia (Lebanon) that played a role in the decline of the kingdom of Judah. St. Sidoine Apollinaris was a bishop of Clermont, who married the daughter of the emperor Avitus. The name was popularized in the 1960s with the TV series for children Aglaé and Sidonie.
The Sidonie are celebrated on August 21st.
