Intense headaches, painful stiffness in the neck, vomiting are characteristic signs in the big child, while the infant simply shows his discomfort by acute cries, fever and an unusually tense fontanelle.
The diagnosis is based on a lumbar puncture, to analyze the cerebrospinal fluid that will indicate whether it is a viral or bacterial meningitis.
The first is by far the least serious and is treated by painkillers and antipyretics. In contrast, bacterial meningitis urgently requires the infusion of antibiotics.
